About this episode
Is Rahul Mehra in love with Kiran, or obsessed with the *idea* of her?
This deep-dive into Darr examines Shah Rukh Khan's iconic role through a critical lens, unpacking how Bollywood's golden age romanticized stalking and rejection.
We analyze the toxic dynamics, cultural context, and what this film reveals about how cinema shapes our understanding of love vs. obsession with an American perspective on Indian storytelling.

So if I mention Halloween, what comes to mind?
Hopefully not Santa Claus or Mira from Jag.
Ducky John and her darling outfits, Cute daydreams of
Samar. OK, OK, clearly I'm teasing
about what I said recently on here about Halloween this year
for me. When you hear Halloween, do you
also think scary? What scares you?
Do you like to be scared or no? Me.
I guess it depends It always depends.
No matter the question, there are topics that tickle my spine.
Films, of course. People want to feel the chills,
the terrifying. Maybe you saw my online video
series or other videos I did on Bazikar or my series on Dart,
and I fear I never hurt anybody. Well, now we all know that's not
quite true, now is it? Sometimes I think, you know,
life is scary enough. It definitely is.
Which is scarier, dealing with a stalker or rejection?
Curious what you think between me and you.
If I were friends with Kieran, I'll give her some advice and a
simple way to stop stalking in its tracks that I thought of.
I would tell her you're on girl. I got to do to stop.
It is simply just turn around, show interest, right?
I mean, do stalkers ever want who actually wants them?
Not from what I can see. I mean, all right, I do feel for
all clearly. I understand in many ways, like
so many other fans. Oh, roll, honey.
But at the same time I if I'm going to be honest, I actually
have personal experience in my life with stalking.
I have been a Kieran myself in my life and true stalking is of
course not funny. Like my little joke.
No, take it from me, I will say this, or rather ask this.
Did Raul even know Kieran really?
Or did he like the idea of her, the fantasy of her, someone he
couldn't have? Human nature, right?
You want what you can have sometimes simply because you
can't have it. So then you never get it right.
No happy ending ever because if someone always wants what they
cannot have and then whatever they can have, they don't then
one and so they never feel satisfaction or know in their
life. I mean, I do of course have some
thoughts. For example, Kieran had many
wonderful qualities from what I can see, that is for sure.
Two qualities though, I feel are especially important ones
perhaps, and may very well have to do with what Raul saw in her.
She was attractive and she was nice.
Many times men can interpret kindness, friendliness, or
friendship of someone they find attractive as interest.
I understand. I mean how can you really know?
It's always worth looking into to know for sure.
Of course. No problem, I would do the same.
You got to know it's worth a shot.
But of course once you do know, I mean you have your answer
right? Maybe if people were nicer these
days it wouldn't seem like someone loved you and wanted to
be with you forever and ever. Because these days it seems
kindness or friendliness can be for some reason so unusual when
it seems people are only nice when they want something from
you. Someone nice must want you,
right? Obsessively, passionately, you
and only you, Forever and ever. There is no other reason to be
kind. There is no other reason to be
friends, right? And then there is, of course,
what many people are talking about so much these days that
it's gotten to the point where many men say they are now also,
in addition to all of this, afraid to approach or interact
with women at all for fear of it being misinterpreted, exploited,
ridiculed or even worse, mischaracterized.
Should we blame Rahul for that? Yeah, probably.
Probably. That's how we got here.
We're all just doing our best right out here.
We're all misinterpreting or mischaracterizing or missing,
missing, missing. What you going to do?
I'll tell you what you shouldn't do.
Take it personally. Easier said than done, sure,
right? But as scary as stalking was for
Quran or rejection was for a whole, it happens.
I mean, it's really just the numbers game, right?
Most of us, I mean most of us, we only want one person.
It's not like a buffet, you know?
Do you take it personally if out of all the people that play the
lottery, you are not the random or lucky winner if you pick one
job when you have several job offers, does it mean there's
something wrong with any job unless it is the one you pick to
work? I mean, most of us can't work
that many jobs simultaneously at once, no?
Should those companies feel bad, wrong, damaged or not good
enough? Should they stalk you so you can
reject them some more? Raoul, darling, it's OK.
You are OK. I mean, you can be.
Keep putting yourself out there. Don't give up here.
No. Except no.
You will hear it, don't take it personally.
Honor yourself, be honest with yourself, work on yourself.
Become be the lottery someone gambles on win who wants you to
win once.
